No Fluff. Just Facts on How to Navigate the Recruiting Process
If you're a parent or high school player trying to understand this recruiting circus—relax. We’re about to simplify the entire 2024–25 NCAA recruiting calendar, give you a real plan, and keep you from getting hustled.
🧠 First, Understand the Recruiting Periods
Let’s break down the NCAA’s lingo:
-
🔴 Dead Period: No in-person visits, evaluations, or contact of any kind. Emails, phone calls, and social media messages only.
-
🟡 Quiet Period: You can visit schools and talk to coaches, but only on campus. No off-campus recruiting allowed.
-
🟢 Evaluation Period: Coaches can come watch you play or practice—but no contact.
-
🟢 Contact Period: Full contact. Coaches can talk to you in person, come to your school, visit your house. The best time to lock in offers.
🚨 Key Eligibility Rule: You Cannot Talk to College Coaches Until June 15 After Sophomore Year
If you're a freshman or sophomore, college coaches cannot initiate direct contact with you until June 15 going into your junior year. Period.
But here’s the workaround:
💡 How Top Underclassmen Still Get Offers:
-
They use their high school coach, a recruiting coordinator, or their parents to reach out and share film.
-
If a D1 school likes what they see, they can make a verbal offer through your coach.
-
FBS programs only offer elite freshmen and sophomores — if you're not nationally ranked, don’t expect attention here.
-
FCS and D2 schools generally start with the next up class because they don’t have the massive recruiting staff FBS schools do.
If you're not that elite yet, it’s not a death sentence—it just means your time is coming, and you need to prepare to dominate the next phase.
📅 2024–25 Recruiting Calendar: What to Know
🔥 Timeline Highlights:
-
Aug 1–31, 2024: Quiet Period (except 48 hrs before/after home games = Dead Period)
-
Sept 1–Dec 1, 2024: Evaluation Period (coaches watch but don’t talk—make film count)
-
Dec 6–19: Contact Period (coaches can talk, visit, offer—big time)
-
Jan 12: Contact Day inside a Quiet Period
-
Apr 15–May 24: Spring Contact Period (prime time for offers, spring ball visits)
🗓 When Should You Make Your Move?
📈 Fall (Sept–Dec): Be Seen
Coaches are in the stands watching—you need to make every game a highlight tape.
Action Plan:
-
Post your best plays weekly
-
Share film with coaches via your coach or DM
-
Be easy to find online (Twitter/Hudl/IG)
🤝 Winter (Dec–Feb): Talk Business
During contact periods, coaches can visit, talk, offer. This is prime recruiting season.
Action Plan:
-
Lock in campus visits
-
Have your transcript, SAT/ACT test scores, and verified measurables ready
-
Build real conversations in school and on campus, not just hype - be Directional (How can i secure an opportunity, what are the next steps, ect...)
🌱 Spring (Apr–May): Relationship Building
D1 Schools have spring ball during this time. Recruitment is generally slower, but this is when they do the most work and start lining up their next class. When May comes around D1 Schools will be stopping by school to meet with players face to face during this time as well. Make sure to tell your coach you want to be included - if you talk to a coach exchange contact information!
Action Plan:
-
Ball out during spring workouts and 7v7s
-
Drop updated spring film clips weekly
-
Send updates to your list of schools
🧭 Your Camp Strategy
Don't waste time and money flying to every camp. Use this system:
▶️ Players with NO Offers
-
3–5 Local D1 FCS Camps
-
1–2 Local D1 FBS Camps
-
1 Mega Camp
✅ Players WITH D1 Offers
-
2–3 Local D1 FCS Camps
-
2–3 Local D1 FBS Camps
-
1–2 Mega Camps
❗ Only travel across the country if a coach has:
Watched your film
Said they like it
Told you directly: “If you show up, you’ve got a shot”
🧠 For Parents: How to Help Without Helicoptering
-
Monitor every invite. Ask, “Which schools are actually confirmed to be there?”
-
Keep camp trips regional unless you get a personal invite from a legit staff member
-
Help with highlight editing and posting
-
Teach your athlete how to introduce themselves, hand a card to a coach, and follow up
🎯 Final Word
