How to pick Summer High School Prospect Camps

How to pick Summer High School Prospect Camps

HSFB Prospect Camps 101: What's Worth It and What’s a Waste of Time

Are these recruiting camps a scam? How do you know which ones are legit? If a coach invites you to a camp, does it mean you're getting recruited? Let's cut through the confusion and get real about what high school football prospect camps are, what they’re not, and how you should approach them.

First Off: Are Camps Necessary?

Yes. Camps are a critical part of the process. Whether you’ve been flooded with “personal” invites or haven’t gotten a single one, camps are where names get made and confirmed. But not all camps are equal, and wasting time or money on the wrong one is easy if you don’t know what you’re doing.

What Camps Are Worth It?

🔥 The Elite: National Camps (For Serious Ballers Only)

  • Adidas Rivals

  • Under Armour All-America

  • The Opening

  • Prep Redzone Showcases
  • Army National Combine

These are invite-only and for good reason. You don’t just show up. You attend a combine, get official testing numbers, and if your measurables stack up—you might get the invite. Even if you don’t, you still get your verified times and experience top-tier competition. Pick one nearby and lock it in.

💪 School-Hosted Prospect Camps (The Real Opportunity)

These are where the magic happens. Why? Because you’re working directly with that school’s coaching staff. And if it’s an FCS camp, all the local D2/D3 coaches are there too. More exposure, real relationships.

Tip: Stick to local schools. Don’t fly across the country unless a coach has straight up told you, “We’ve seen your film, we like you, and you’ve got a real shot if you show up.”

⚠️ BEWARE: 3rd-Party “Exposure” Camps

Some are solid. A lot are straight-up money grabs. If the flyer promises 20+ D1 programs but doesn’t list them by name, it’s probably BS. College Coaches CANNOT Attend invite only, private camps - ESPECIALLY not during a Contact Period. NCAA Recruiting Calendar HERE.

Safe bet? Stick to:

  • School-named camps (i.e., “Colgate University Prospect Camp”)

  • Mega Camps run by college coaching staffs

"Personal" Camp Invites: Are They Real?

Most aren’t. If you get an invite out of nowhere and have never had a convo with that staff, it’s just marketing. Camps cost money and they need bodies. Don’t get excited unless:

  1. You’ve talked with a position coach or recruiting coordinator directly

  2. They reference specific film or plays

  3. They say you’ve got a shot if you show up

If not? Still go—but only if it's within 5 hours and affordable.

Who Should Go Where?

Let’s keep it simple with this cheat sheet:

▶️ Players with NO Offers

  • 3–5 Local D1 FCS Camps

  • 1–2 Local D1 FBS Camps

  • 1 Mega Camp

✅ Players WITH D1 Offers

  • 2–3 Local D1 FCS Camps

  • 2–3 Local D1 FBS Camps

  • 1–2 Mega Camps

🚫 Do NOT travel across the country unless a coach has told you explicitly:

“I’ve seen your tape. I love it. Come to this camp. You’ve got a shot.”

How to Actually Get Noticed

Going to camps isn't enough. You need to show up ready, perform, and connect. After every camp:

  • Introduce yourself to the coach

  • Shake their hand, look them in the eye

  • Drop an athletic business card

  • Say thank you

Film your reps. Post clips. One big-time play can get shared everywhere—think ESPN Top 10 energy.

D1 Physical Expectations

Most D1 guys are 6’0+, 200+ lbs. But that’s not a hard rule. Focus on:

  • Speed, explosion, strength

  • Nutrition and recovery

  • Combine prep + position work

(Shameless plug: this is exactly what the 5 Star Football Packages were built for. Combine prep, position specific camp-style drills, contrast training, speed, recovery—done for you, for your position.)

Parents: Want Your Kid Noticed?

Invest in:

  • The right camps

  • Real training (not cookie-cutter BS) - Positional Programs HERE.

  • Relationship-building (social media + in-person)

If you’re serious, start with one of my training packages. Zero risk—money back if you don’t see results. No questions asked. But you will see results. Everyone does.

Final Word

Camps are essential—but you’ve got to be strategic. Know your level. Know what’s real. And don’t let ego or hype run the show. The right exposure + the right mindset = real opportunities.
