Kilgore’s Jakalen Sheffield drove to Ruston with no offers and had two before the day was out.

Jakalen Sheffield (5′10″, 170), a cornerback out of Kilgore High School in Texas, took a trip to Ruston and came home with the first offer of his recruitment. Hours later he had a second.

The Louisiana Tech visit

The visit gave him a firsthand look at the facilities and time with the staff.

“My visit to Louisiana Tech went great. I like the facility and the location. The coaches were cool and it’s like a big family down there.”

By the end of the trip the Bulldogs had offered — the first scholarship offer of his college recruitment.

Then UTSA called

Within hours of leaving Ruston, Sheffield picked up his second offer, from UTSA. The Roadrunners had been to a bowl game in each of the five seasons under head coach Jeff Traylor at that point. Sheffield called the offer “a crazy feeling.”

Foot quickness and ball skills are what make him play: he covers ground in a hurry and he finishes at the catch point. Two offers in one day was the market catching up.

What changed

Sheffield had recently joined 5 Star Football Recruiting under Coach Isaac Hadac, and credits the move for the surge.

“The amount of exposure and connections has been a big factor in my recruitment.”
