John Luke Minner was a baseball player. Then he played one season of football and the offers started.
John Luke Minner’s path to football didn’t start under the Friday night lights. It started on a baseball field.
The 6′4″, 225-pound linebacker/defensive end from Sayre School in Kentucky was a standout on the diamond before switching to football just ahead of his junior year. Less than a full season into playing the sport, he was one of the most intriguing prospects in Kentucky’s 2026 class.
A 3-star rating, one season in
“I have great coaches and have been working incredibly hard, and having faith that the hard work will pay off — and it did. This means even more to me because I didn’t start playing until my junior year due to my past baseball career. So it’s amazing to see how far I’ve come in a short period of time. This also means I have a high ceiling and a lot to learn — the success hasn’t stopped yet.”
The offers
One season of tape, and already D1 offers from Georgia State, Coastal Carolina, Marshall, Georgetown and Grambling State, with more programs circling as the film moved.
“I’m blessed to have several very good opportunities right now, and it’s difficult to only name a few. My family and I will be sitting down to pick a top three or four schools where there is a clear mutual interest.”
What he was working on
“My size, speed, and strength have been big advantages for me, and I’ll definitely be improving those this spring. I’m also focusing on my football technique, flexibility, hips, and hands to help me and my team next year.”
That is the honest read on a converted athlete: the tools arrived first and the technique is the catch-up work.
Navigating the process
“With the changing recruiting world of college football, Coach Isaac has been a great counselor and is very knowledgeable about the process. His connections to get many coaches’ eyes on me and my talents have been very helpful.”
